What I Learned: If You See Her by Shiloh Walker

What I Learned: Is that Ms. Walker is very quickly becoming a master at romantic suspense. She has taken a mystery and added so many layers. My detective skills are no match for her. To have successfully taken this mystery and have it span the entire series, and to have done it so skilfully, is incredibly impressive. I just hope there isn't a 4^th book in the series. I don't think I could take it! Is that I can not enjoy the main characters, and yet still devour and demand more of the book/series. Hope and Remy just didn't quite do it for me. I'm not really sure why, and it has nothing to do with the writing, just my personal preferences. However, the plot and action were enough to keep me greedily consuming the pages. There were a few spots that I found it difficult to understand what was happening. I just couldn't seem to follow along with the story. Ultimately it made sense and I didn't lack anything by the end. WHY IS BOOK 3 (If You Know Her) NOT IN MY HANDS RIGHT NOW???? Is that THIS is how Romantic Suspense should be written.

It's quick and fast and amazingly great for busy people.

Wonderfully delicious sounding meals.
Great ideas.
I love the ones that give you different options based off of one frozen meal.
The reason this didn't get a 5 star review?
There is not a single picture throughout the book.
I still really enjoyed the book, but some pics would have made it exceptional.

One Girl Cookies: Recipes For Cakes, Cupcakes, Whoopie Pies, And Cookies From Brooklyn's Beloved Bakery by Dawn Casale

This cookbook does a pretty good job of covering the sweets.
Cakes, cupcakes, pies, squares, tarts, cookies...
The recipes look very straight forward and don't contain any surprises.
I like that they appear to be simple recipes that are then jazzed up with sauces, frostings, glazes, etc, that may be more exotic.

Canadian Living: The One Dish Collection: All In One Dinners That Nourish Body And Soul by Canadian Living Test Kitchen

Sorry, I'm still stuck in the first section...reading the recipes!!!

Ok, the pictures are mouthwatering, the recipes look absolutely delicious, and I can't wait to pull out the ingredients to start cooking.

These Canadian Living cookbooks are always absolutely inspiring.

Like with all cookbooks, I wish there were more pictures. At least one for each recipe...

I also prefer when the different meal times are separate. They have many egg dishes in the the casseroles and bakes. I would rather find them in a breakfast section.

Finally - Don't think what I thought. I thought this was a ONE POT collection, not a ONE DISH collection. Basically you will probably use more than one pot to make some of these dishes, but everything will be SERVED in one dish.

I would recommend this cookbook.

Meal Plan 1/22/12 - The Freeze Continues

I've been struck down with a cold, and didn't get all the cooking done that I wanted to last weekend. So I started the enchilada's yesterday, and I will finish putting them together today. I'm also off work Mon and Tues so I plan to do a bit more cooking then as well!

It's time again, for another life update!

I feel like I've been talking in circles lately. Mentioning that things are happening, but not really explaining.

So first of all, The Mr. was downsized in November. It was a bit of a shock to me (apparently not to him - he didn't want to worry me!?!?!). We're doing ok, and it looks like the market is picking up a bit so *fingers crossed* for him, if you could please?

Second, I mentioned to you all that I officially have my piece of paper that claims I can work as a Library Technician. WELL, as of January 30th, I WILL BE! There was an opening at my work. One of our staff is taking a 9 month parental leave. I was selected as the replacement. It's at a different location, and it means that my transit time is either going to double or triple. *sigh* But the experience is totally going to be worth it!

It was VERY weird to see my job posted. I've been doing it for, well 9 years and if you count part time, 10 years. I know some of my co-workers are a bit worried, as I am taking a very large amount of knowledge with me. BUT like I keep telling them, I'm just an extension away! AND hypothetically I will be back in 9 months!

I'm hoping to get myself a tablet, so I can use it on the bus. That way I can type up reviews and stuff, and then when I get wifi, I can go ahead and schedule/post them. With The Mr. being off work, my review writing time disappeared. I would write them up after work while I waited for him to come pick me up. Well, now he picks me up when I'm done work! lol

I've also taken up doing something called Freezer Meals. It's fantastic! I'm doing a bunch of cooking on one day during the weekend, and I'm ending up with tons of meals in my freezer. They are easy to prepare and delicious! I've so far only done 2 days of cooking, but I already had 57 meals in my freezer. Fifty-seven meals, that are 2 servings each!! HOW AMAZING IS THAT? Tonight or tomorrow I'm hoping to do some chicken enchiladas. I was supposed to make them on Monday, but I'm sick, fighting a cold, and just couldn't work up the energy.

I'll keep you all posted with the freezer meals, and I'll hopefully get some good posts done where I explain some more about them, and maybe throw some recipes at you! Hopefully.

Anyways, the Boss just handed me some work... ttyl!

Movie Friday - Underworld: Awakening

I am very excited for this next installment of the Underworld series. I absolutely love this series (with the exception of Rise of the Lycans - can't handle movies that are only werewolves *shiver*).

The cheese if phenomenal. The acting mediocre at best.

But it is DAMN entertaining.

I'm excited to see where the story goes.

And... *drool*
Kris Holden-Ried is in the movie!! I hope he has a shirtless scene.... THAT would make my week *happy sigh*

Anyways, you know where I will be this weekend!!!

Movie Friday - Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol is the 4th installment in the series.

I saw this in IMAX.

It was thrilling!!

And frightening!!

Part of the movie takes place in Dubai, on that giant tower building thing they made...

The Burj Khalifa.

See this thing?

YEAH.

So they ended up removing a pane of glass from WAY UP HIGH.

Then they pointed the camera down.

I honestly had to look away from the screen because I got AFRAID I WOULD FALL!!!!

That is how amazing the cinematography was in this movie!!

The story, yeah, it was cheese, but that is what I love. Despite the fact that they tried to introduce humour (at least I think that's what I hope they did) that felt forced, it was still wonderful.

Tom Cruise has totally redeemed himself in terms of his acting.

I LOVE Jeremy Renner in this, and Simon Pegg, and even Josh Holloway for the ....er.... I'll stop there! lol

What I Learned: That Mr. Gordon-Levitt isn't just a really pretty face. He's doing some spectacular things for the arts. That this book is VERY cute and is definitely going to be added to my SMILE books. What are smile books? These are the books that I grab when I need a smile. That I probably would still buy this book despite the cost of the book (I do think it is slightly overpriced for what you get - BUT it's currently on sale at Amazon.com [as of Jan 10, 2012]. You see part of the proceeds are split up and given to all the artists who contributed something to the collection. That I am really excited to see the next volume. That I REALLY want to get the hitRECord RECollection: Volume 1! It is a hardbound 64-page Book, DVD & CD!! Want to see what I think is so cute about this? What do you as a blog follower, reader, etc, look for in a review?
Are there pieces of information that are key to you?
Do you want to know how many pages it is?
Do you want a link to buy the item?
Do you want links to the authors webpage, twitter, facebook?
Not so much what you are looking for in the review (because I think I have that covered now) but all the peripherals!
I'm trying to create a template, and I want to make it what you guys want, and what is easiest for me....
Cause, going back to the start there? I'm lazy! lol
Also, does anyone know of a good way to make a template in Blogger that doesn't involve me using Windows Writer thing?

As a side note, I've been super productive at home, doing some freezer meals, cleaning, etc....
And so that means the reviews that I need to write, still haven't been done :(

Is this thing on?
Is there anyone out there?

Wow, that hiatus was a bit unexpected.
But I think it was very much needed....

For a while there I was contemplating just shutting the whole thing down.
Really? Why was I doing this. Why was I stressing myself out over publishing some reviews...

Well, I'm feeling better about it. The idea of writing some reviews doesn't make me panic as much anymore.

I really think I have made the right decision, to start doing what I want, when I want with this blog.

I'm going to start making it more about me, and less about....well.... you!!
That doesn't mean I love you all any less!!

But I need to stop trying to please you all and work on making myself happy!

*phew* That felt good.

Anyways. I'm off to do some cooking. Hopefully maybe I can snag some pictures and post a recipe or two soon!!

I just wanted to wish you all a FANTASTIC New Years! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday, and that 2012 proves amazing for you!

Why do I blog?

I've really been thinking about this lately, during my unintended hiatus from said blog.
Why am I doing this?
It's not exactly fun for me anymore....
I've been saying it's not fun - and trying to make it fun for about a year now.

And it's not working.

I'm not going to get rid of my blog, but I think that I am going adapt to my changing style.
For all intents and purposes, I'm no longer going to take review copies.
Unless I've worked with an author/publisher/publicist before, I'm not going to take any unsolicited reviews.
I'm probably going to stick with NetGalley for now, but even that might go away....

You see, I don't want to review books I don't love any more.
I don't want to write up something for a book that I was "meh" about.
I don't want to have to finish books just because I said I would review it.

What this means to you?
There are probably going to be a lot less reviews.

I know this means that I am going to lose some followers.
And a year ago? I probably would have panicked a bit at that thought. I mean I had worked so hard to get the ones that I have.

But it's ok.
And really, it is.

Books have started to take over my life, and not in a good way. Other parts of my life are suffering, and so that means I`m going to cut back on the books I read. I also want to start doing some posts that have my others loves in them.I want to do more baking, cooking, picture taking. I would LOVE to start sewing again. So for those of you who are old followers, I apologize for the change up. I know it's not what you came here for!

Slowly Emerging From My Cocoon!

I'm slowly coming out of my cocoon.
And I think I have to relearn how to blog.
It's been a week since my last post!
AND I'm totally in a reading funk.
I don't even want to pick up a book, let alone start another DNF!
Maybe I'll stick to cookbooks - maybe do some reviewing/recipe trials!
Well anyways, I'm going to try and get back into the game.

RECIPE - Two-Cheese Mashed Potatoes Slow Cooker Style

Just finished cooking these in the slow cooker.
WOW!
Inspired from this recipe: Slow Cooker Garlic Mashed Potatoes

Two-Cheese Mashed Potatoes Slow Cooker Style

3 pounds potatoes, diced with peel
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup butter
1 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 cup milk, or as needed
150ml cream cheese
3 tablespoons Parmesan cheese

Place the potatoes, water, and butter into a slow cooker. Season with garlic powder, and pepper. Cover, and cook on Low for 7 hours, or High for 4 hours.
Mash potatoes with a masher or electric beater. Add in the cream cheese and the desired amount of milk to achieve a creamy consistency. Mix in the Parmesan cheese.
Keep warm on low until serving.

I know one dish I will be adding into my rotation. This will definitely come in handy for Thanksgiving and Christmas!

What I learned:

That Ms. Edwards has a sense of humour just like mine! She made fun of many of the same things I make fun of! (ie: Uggs!)
That despite the fact that I am not a huge fan of older woman/younger man story lines, I LOVE Kane and Claire. I think it's great that their story is unfolding as we read the Rising Star Chef series!
Did I mention that Ms. Edwards is funny? Because the one liners in this are fantastic!
That despite not having a *ton* of sex in the book, the pages still sizzled with the chemistry between Danny and Eva.
That by the end of the book I was frustrated with Kane and Claire - I wanted so much more!!! I'm hoping that the 3rd in the series will resolve that story arc! Please??? :)
That I am ever so glad that Ms. Edwards includes some of her recipes at the back of the book! YUM!
That I am glad that her characters don't give up the fight and they go after what they want, despite the fact that it might not always seem like the right or smart decision!

Graduation

Last night was it.
I attended my first post-secondary graduation - where I was a graduate!
I'm incredibly proud of myself.
This took me 7 years of hard work.
Now, I'm a library tech!
Anyone hiring? :)

There are so many people who deserve many thanks for this. They helped me accomplish this. Without them, I would have nothing.

Side note: Why are the gowns so ugly? They are huge and I feel 800 pounds now, after looking at the pictures!

Last night, my friend AVM and The Mr. accompanied me to Jack Astor's where we had a marvelous time!

I wanted to steal the little pilons, but decided I probably shouldn't!

You can barely see it, but they put down astro turf for us to sit on!
AND they had leather covers over the backs of the chairs!

They were promoting Movember!
Their coasters had a pop-out mustache that you could wear!
She was a sexy beast ALL night!

I had some sort of pasta with a bunch of seafood and sausage in it.
Sausage and shrimp = thumbs up!
I have also decided I do not like scallops!

AVM had some sort of pasta and chicken
(Yes, I'm too lazy to go to the website to look up what it's called!)

The Mr. had a burger.... like usual :D
Although he had AWESOME Spicy Sausage Poutine!
That is also as close to a picture of him as I could get....

Yes, she wore it ALL evening!

All in all? A very fun evening was had!
I definitely recommend Jack Astor's (if you are in Canada...lol).
They have awesome food, awesome service, and awesome customer service!

What I learned:

That short can be very sexy! And by short I mean length....er that still isn't right. Let's go with the number of pages can be few and still be sexy!
That the expected doesn't always have to happen for the sexy times to still be sexy.
That I didn't really understand some of Nathan's rational, but overall it didn't detract from the story (except for a little bit at the end).
That I feel that this story should be part of a larger one. This feels more like one of those freebies that authors put out when they have a story that readers love and want to see more of.
That I wish I knew more about Cait, Nathan, and Liam.
That Liam is damn sexy, and him and Nathan together could be VERY dangerous!
That I am curious enough to want to read another Callie Croix story.

I did it in a bit of a different order, we ended up eating out Tuesday instead of Thursday.
BUT either way, I kept to the meal plan.

What I learned:

That I had suspend a lot of disbelief - if I didn't I couldn't have finished the book.
.That I honestly can't see a homebody/ranch manager running to Afghanistan to find her father.
That as mentioned in my other reviews, Ms. Rivers can sure write the steamy scenes!
That I really do enjoy Ms. Rivers way of writing, I am however not huge on the story itself :(
All three stories in this series feel like they should be so much longer. I couldn't form enough of an attachment to care of Allison and Robert.

That this book completely creeped me out.
That despite the creeping, I couldn't put it down, and devoured it in hours.
That I know I didn't understand everything that happened but understood enough that I never ever want this to happen in real life.
That I've decided that I don't know if I want to live through the apocalypse!
That after finishing the book... are any of them really a good guy?
That I will never read this book again, and that I miss happy shinny feel good books.

I honestly don't know how I would rate this.

I hated every moment of reading this book.
BUT it was completely captivating and I couldn't put it down.
I am debating between a 1 and a 4.

Well, let's just say I am more turtle than hare...

I am slowly (very slowly) dropping some weight.
About a pound every 1-2 weeks. So I am ok with that.

But I am definitely slacking in the working out department.
And with winter almost here, I have to find things to do inside.

I want to get back to swimming.

But darn it I am tired when I get home from work.

I feel like I am constantly in a state of flux. I feel like I don't have a routine...
But I do have one, and I guess that is my problem. My routine hasn't been routine lately...
We haven't been doing things on the days we normally do them, so that leads
to having to do them when I want to be doing things like swimming...
Yeah, I just reread that sentence, and I know it makes no sense! lol

What I learned:

That sometimes you have to let go of the believable in order to finish the story.
That, like the first in the series, the story is very short with a lot of action. I could have used another 100 or so pages to flesh out more of the details.
That Ms. Rivers REALLY can write the sizzle!
That I can handle some TSTL* moments, but don't always enjoy them.
That I don't handle grey areas very well - it's right or wrong, and you should fix the wrong if you get caught up in something. *sigh*
That I don't think Margo is a very bright cop... and is prone to panic in tough situations.
But despite that, she does what she has to do to get the job done.
That I enjoy description of scenery and environment more than I thought.

This is my meal plan... and I'm sticking to it!

I have been absolutely horrible lately. I think I can probably count on all my fingers the number of times I have actually made a meal in the last, oh, 3-4 weeks?
Part has been the fact that I was in a really bad funk. Which was causing me some stress. Which made me not want to cook.
This was part of the stress/funk:

She's ok now. She had an abscess on her tail that popped (yes, eww!!) but she is so much better now!!
If only her and the other one would stop fighting. All would be right in my world (and I could get a decent night's sleep!)

The real reason for the title of my post is that The Mr. and I have gone over our finances.
We are spending ridiculously. There is no reason our bank account should be where it is! LOL
We have started to add goals to our calendar - have $X saved by DATE type things.
We want a house. And we want it now. It's not going to happen now, but we are in a much better place than we were not too long ago.
We drove through some subdivisions yesterday, we grabbed a new home book from the grocery store, and we started even talking about how we would decorate!!
I am excited about possibilities!

The idea... lol.... is to cook more and eat out less. Some of our dinners were costing us $50-$60. Times that by probably 10 in two weeks: $500-$600 we could be saving!! Groceries? They don't cost that much!!! This isn't even fracturing in the lunches we would have to buy because I didn't have anything for us to take to work!

Don't get me wrong. I'm not going militant. There are going to be times when we eat out. It's in our nature. We have stuff to do, and it makes more sense to eat on the run than it does to go home and make something. OR we have a dinner date with friends.... who knows. But either way it's going to happen. Also, I have a late shift at work on Thursdays. I'm not going to get home until close to 8pm. I dislike eating that late, so that means you will see a lot of my meal plans where we eat out on Thursdays.

So here goes:
Sunday - Perogies and steak
Monday - Out
Tuesday - Spaghetti Squash, garlic bread, and chicken
Wednesday - Honey Garlic Meatballs with Rice and Carrots
Thursday - Out
Friday - Chili
Saturday - Leftovers

Despite eating out twice this week, I am going to have lunches available for the next day because I am going to make additional leftovers.

What about you? Do you have any tips on saving money? I WISH we could do coupon clipping like they can in the States!!

That despite feeling like there were parts missing in the book, I could still really enjoy the chemistry between the main characters.
That I don't think I am really wanting to visit Guatemala... or at least off the beaten track!
AND if I do go to Guatemala, I can do it in a pair of heels!
That despite some of my feminist ways, I do really enjoy the damsel in distress story!
That people should stop questioning things and just live in the moment - take a chance! Why did Jane and Harrison keep pushing each other away!!
That sometimes though, you shouldn't take people at face value!
That this story desperately needed to be longer!! Give me more!!!!
That despite it's length, characters can move VERY fast in just 84 pages!
That Ms. Rivers can write some damn fine smexy scenes!

That Ms. Walker can really write a well done book.
That I hate when books don't resolve the entire story! Especially major plots!!! Who done it!! Don't make me wait!!
That I must by a book light so that I can read in the car!! I only had 15 pages left!! FIFTEEN!!!! And stupid time change made it dark in the car when it shouldn't have been!!!!
That book two is coming at the end of January... and I THINK I might just be able to hang on!
That Ms. Walker writes kick ass flawed characters that I just want to hug and squeeze and call George.
That I am so entirely sick of people being judged - even if it is in a book - because they are a bit different.... be it because they are .... well that might be too spoilery ;)
That I miss adult romance - be it contemporary or suspense or.... Time to take a break from the YA?
That I LOVE banter between characters. I LIVE on that stuff. I love how they joke and rib and etc with each other.
Lena and Ezra? Smokin' hot! They make me very very happy - especially Ezra and his ability to see beyond face value (<- there is a bit of a pun in there....lol). And Lena, for enduring and conquering life!

Happy Halloween!! 2011

I miss Halloween.
I miss dressing up.
I miss decorating.
I miss seeing all the little costumes.
I can't wait until we have a house and I can do most of that again.
I know I could dress up for work, but I'm just not in a mental place right now to have fun with it.

One of my favourite memories, was the year I totally did our front yard.
I carved about 10 pumpkins, and sat them on logs along the length of the driveway.
I then took my dads coveralls, stuffed them with paper, and put a broom down its back and one leg.
I took a paper plate and put it in for the neck.
I had him lean against a stool, with his arm curving around the seat.
There sat a pumpkin, with a face carved on it.
I took the guts and put it at the neck, and on the bottom of the pumpkin.
I then took some ketchup (hey, I had to be creative! lol) and put it on the neck and on the pumpkin.
HE sat on our front porch, waiting to welcome the kids!
He's my favourite to this day. I wish I had some pictures!!

The other weekend, we bought a new crockpot and I have been ITCHING to use it! It's big, probably too big for just the two of us, but yeah, I'm excited!

I'm very blah right now, and I apologize for that.
I don't want to read.
I'm having trouble evening thinking about reviews.

I think part of the problem is steming from the fact that I am exhausted.
We seem to be running non-stop.
This will be our first weekend *free* in a month.
Which doesn't seem like a lot, but to us, the homebodies? It totally is.

That Ms. Estep can rock the YA world just as well as she can the Adult!!
That geeky girls are FTW*!
That adventures happen in libraries (which, you know... I already knew of course, but I'm glad others get to see that now!)!
That just because you feel like you may not fit in, doesn't mean that you actually don't!
That I would totally dig having Gwen Frost's ability - I would totally start a lost and found business!
That the cool, popular boy might actually like you for you, and not just for fun!

What I learned:

The despite being taught your entire life, that boys are bad, you can still fall in love with the first one you meet.
That boys don't just want to have sex with you, that sometimes they will sacrifice almost anything for you.
That you can be book smart and still get everyone you care for killed because you are stupid.
That being the smartest makes the bad guys aware of you, and want you.
That I am really finished with cliffhanger endings - or maybe they aren't so much cliffhanger ending but not HEA. First story arc is completed, but I was not happy at the end.
That I really hope that the world doesn't fall into this type of situation, because I really don't want to become like the girls in the school!!

Weigh In for #RBW and our weekend getaway at Taboo!

This post was supposed to be full of pictures of why I gained weight this past week.
BUT I might be writing this at work, and my pictures just might be at home! So I'm totally yanking some off the website!
The Mr. and I went to a resort for a night. Taboo Resort, Golf and Spa

We have wanted to go here for years. The Mr. had a work event here a few years, and he came home and told me about it. I was soooo jealous!
This is what our room looked like (but we had a corner room, with windows on two sides, wrap around deck, and a king bed!!!!)

We ate amazing food!!
I totally tried Ostrich! Did you know it was a red meat?
Did you know it was healthier than Turkey and Chicken?
Did you know it tastes fantastic?
Anyways, back to the start. We went up on Saturday. It was rainy, and gusty, and so incredibly beautiful to look over that water and see the storm ravage the lake.
We had an amazing dinner.
The next morning - amazing breakfast! (Raisin walnut french toast with caramel sauce and berry marscapone cheese!)
Then we had an awesome burger for lunch....
See? That is why I gained weight. But it was totally worth it!
Especially since just before we left we went to the spa....

And it was fantastic.
And I need more massages in my life!

If you can ever get there?
I definitely recommend it!
Although they are only open seasonally! I want to say April or May to mid October!
I'm trying to convince The Mr. that we need to renew our vows there for either our 10 or 15 anniversary!!!

So... does that justify the 5lbs weight gain?

Men who annoy me can totally turn it around... cooking helps!
Family is important - but remember that sometimes the family you are born with doesn't have to be the family you choose...
An old dog CAN learn new tricks... it just may take a few smacks, and their son moving around the world to come to really master it!
There are a ton of Zen sayings that really teach a lot!
Ms. Edwards must pray to the Cover Gods and they must like her lots!!
No seriously, did you look at that cover? Why doesn't The Mr. look like that when he is cooking me food....

Can't wait for #3!!

Loved this. It is a great read for the paranormal fans. It has fae and dragons and vampyres!! Oh my!
It is very fast paced with non-stop action.
And the sex scenes? Bow chica wow wow!
This is truly one of my favourite kinds of reads. The ones that you pick up and then put down, realizing that 4 hours have gone by and you've devoured the book. You get to forget about all your problems in the world and have a nice (but exhilarating) read!
Thea Harrison is very quickly becoming a favourite read of mine. She has great creativity and she strings her words together pretty darn good (much better than I do!! LOL).
I'm going to have to pick up Serpent's Kiss ASAP!

Wednesday Weigh In #RBW - Steady as she goes....

We had Canadian Thanksgiving on the weekend.
I went up north to visit my family.

BOTH of those should have contributed to a weight gain....

BUT I stayed steady! I didn't gain or lose!
WIN!

Tonight? I'm going back to swimming. Work was preventing me for the last little while, what with the overtime and such. But no more.

Time to get serious.

I've been feeling great about myself AND my body lately.

My clothes are fitting differently. My body looks different. I may not be losing TONS of weight, but I can definitely see a shape change!

I can't wait to feel even better! :D

Seriously its about Werewolves and the Titanic - what's not to like
I would have adored this when I was a teen, it would have been right up my alley
Strong willed and compassionate heroine
Sorta like a paranormal version of James Cameron's Titanic (in a good way of course)
Storyline is nicely fast paced and you find yourself not wanting to put the book down
Quite a few nice historical Titanic facts interspersed within the story for this Titanic geek to appreciate
Nice sweet ending
Some fun dialogue, especially with Myriam (whom I adored and would have liked more scenes with)
Just a nice escapist tale for the romantic YA reader
Nice passion between the Hero and Heroine

Well, I'm not sure if it is because I have been sick or not...
BUT I have lost 5lbs in the last 2 weeks.
YEAH ME!
I think I know what it is too....
I'm REALLY cutting the carbs from my diet.
I think I have always known that my body doesn't like carbs, but this is definitely some proof positive.
When I order meals I'm getting extra vegetables or salad instead of potatoes or rice.
I'm not finding myself hungry, and I'm still allowing myself some off days (eating crap or dessert, etc).

This upcoming weekend will be a bit of a challenge though.
I'm visiting the fam for Canadian Thanksgiving.
I just have to remember portion control, right? :D

You go through magazines, websites, and cookbooks hoarding recipes.
Well while I was on strike I *started* to go through them. As in the day before I went back to work, I got a 3rd of the way through my saved recipes....lol
So this morning I finished going through them.
This meal plan is based on the idea of using some of those saved recipes!

This book ranks up there with Divergent for WIN of the year!
Right from the start I was hooked. What happened to Mara and her friends?
Why did the lawyers tell her to change her name?

.....
The ending? One of the best I have read, YA or Adult. I loved the twist.
So completely unconventional.
I am wishing with all of my might that the unconventional twist continues into the 2nd book and that it isn't straightened out.

I'm having some pains with my meal plan this week...
I keep looking at it and compared to the last couple of weeks. You know, where I used my freezer?
Yup, that's not happening so much this week. Don't get me wrong, Really? This meal plan? It's not that horrible.... I just see the roast, and think - well, that's like $15. BUT it's going to last for like 4-5 meals!!

WHY did I wait so long to read this? Although I suppose on the plus side, #2 in A Dark Age Dawning series just came out on September the 6th, so I don't have to wait impatiently.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved that the apocalypse is HAPPENING. It's not post. It's the struggle to survive during the change.
While reading this, my mind definitely did some comparisons to Ann Aguirre's Enclave (her YA Dystopian).
Let's just say I want to be on Ann's side when the apocalypse happens.

Now if only this stupid strike would end so that I could go back to work and be able to buy the sequel!

Swimming #RBW

I bought a bathing suit on the weekend.
I'm going to start swimming again.
Did I ever tell you all that I used to be a synchronized swimmer?

Man I miss the water.
I've swum once or twice in the last 16 years, but nothing like what I used to do.

So back to that bathing suit....
Yeah, that means I'm planning to get back into the water. I actually went to a pool yesterday, but the website failed to mention it was closed for maintenance......
ARG!
The pool I will really be going to (the one that DID tell me they were closed for maintenance) is actually on the way home for me. My bus goes right by it. I'm hoping to stop off on my way home and get some swimming in. They have a gym attached, so for a slightly higher fee I can do both if I want to.
And you know what?
I do.
I'm finally excited about loosing weight.

Because Viv wrote it.

My Rambles:

I have to admit, I’m behind on the Granite Wolf series. And I have to wonder if I should have played catch-up before reading this one. NO, they are tied to one another, they are only set in the same world.

Perhaps it was simply this story arc.

Either way I just couldn’t stop comparing this to Wolf Signs (1st in the Granite Lake Wolves series) and found it wanting.

Now please don’t get me wrong….

I LOVED Shaun and Gem. They were adorable and amazing and totally needed to work on their communication (which totally got solved for them!). I loved seeing their chemistry. I LOVED Caroline and Evan – all I can say is DAMN Caroline can kick some shifter ass!! I love the Granite Lake/Takhini Wolves world….

But I ultimately didn’t like a section of the plot. Maybe I’m discovering one of my buttons? And for them to be such bumbling doofuses? I don’t want to get into much because it would take away from the story.

Anyways, despite this not being my favourite of the GLW world, I’m definitely going to be going back and doing some catch-up AND I’m heading to Viv’s site now to find out when the next Takhini Wolves book will be released!

Why did I read it?

I really enjoy Rachel Vincent’s stories.

My Rambles:

I felt that the story was long but I'm hoping that since it was mainly due to so much world building that the next one will be tighter and better for my likes.
The story? It was gripping and powerful. I’m impressed. Ms. Vincent has an amazing imagination and I am seriously loving this world. The characters were entertaining and you could feel the chemistry. They are my favourite part of any Vincent novel.

The story itself has a nice cliffhanger ending (that I normally hate, but didn’t in this case), that I desperately want to see resolved in Shadow Bound.

Plot Development: 7/10

Characters: 9/10

BLACK GOLD EXCERPT:

The crowds thinned by the time they reached the hotel, allthe traffic on the street headed the opposite direction.

“It’s a madhouse out there.” Shaun pushed through the doorthen froze. “Fuck it. Sorry.”

She gave him a wry smile. “Shaun, I won’t knee you in thegroin if you occasionally forget to open the door for me. I can handle doors.”

He grinned sheepishly. “Good, because I totally want to keepmy groin un-kneed.”

She flushed. Thinking about that portion of his anatomy madetaking their time to stroll to the elevators difficult. He leaned past her topress the call button, and his scent filled her nostrils. Made her mouth waterand her knees quiver.

Suddenly, having been apart for a few nights seemed like themost insane—there was that word again—thing.And this time, it was her fault.

Two other couples joined them in the small compartment.Shaun stepped in front of her, as if to guard her. A terribly naughty thoughtpopped into her mind, and as the doors clicked shut, she grabbed a handful ofhis shirt and tugged upward, hard. He stiffened, but didn’t move as she slippedher hand under his T-shirt and let her fingers roam over his warm skin.

Oh dear, she was getting turned on just touching his back.Touching his side. Firm edges to the muscles, the swoop of his waist lined bythe cut of his obliques. The elevator stopped and one couple left, opening moreroom. Rather than shifting away, Gem stuck to his side, sneaking her handaround to his abdomen. Under her fingers, his muscles quivered as she strokedthe ridges of his six-pack. She watched his throat move as he swallowed hard, changingher touch to play with the faint dusting of hair lower down. The intriguingtrail disappeared into where his shirt remained tucked into his pants in thefront, and Gem longed to be able to dip her hand under the waistband.

The elevator door dinged, and she withdrew her hand quickly,dragging her fingernails lightly over his skin. Leaving her mark on his body.

She wanted her mate.

The door slid shut, and he whirled on her, his eyes moreferal than human. “You playing games?”

She shook her head, mouth gone dry. “No games. I want you.”

The elevator couldn’t open fast enough for either of them.

When he dropped the plastic card for the third time, Shaunwas tempted to kick the door down. Gem scooped up the key, slammed it intoplace and shoved the door open all in one motion. She grabbed him by the backof his belt and yanked him in after her, finishing the job of stripping hisshirt away rather handily.

“Your bed or mine?” She mouthed the words against his neck.Gem was wrapped around him, her lips on his skin nibbling and sucking asfrantically as he felt.

“Don’t care. Floor. Wall—”

“Wall?”

Oh, his sweet innocent. He latched onto her shirt andstripped the fabric off without bothering to unbutton it. “I’ll show yousometime.”

They got lost in the kissing business for a bit. Her mouthwas warm and soft. Shaun held her, his thumb and fingers curled gently aroundthe long column of her neck. Sweet. Intoxicating. It wasn’t so much her flavouras the emotions that went along with the kiss. Knowing she was his, to carefor, to be with.

Knowing she wanted him. Powerful, yet very intimidating.

Vivian Arend has hiked, biked, skied and paddled her way around most of North America and parts of Europe. Throughout all the wandering in the wilderness, stories have been planted and they are bursting out in vivid colour. Paranormal, twisted fairytales, red-hot contemporaries—the genres are all over.

FINAL STOP ON THE WOLFIE WORLD TOUR

Welcome to Canada and Natasha’s site. We’ve gone a fullcircle around the world and it seemed fitting to come back to Canada for thisfinal stop on the tour. If you’ve missed any of the stops, the full list is atthe bottom of this post.

So when we come to the end, what should we talk about? Well,what about the fact this isn’t the end. Not really. The wonderful thing aboutstories is that they can continue.

BLACK GOLD is the first of four books. There’s an overallstory arc that threads through them, so yes, it’s a four book series. The nextbooks are tentatively titled SILVER MINE, DIAMOND DUST and MOON SHINE. Asyou’ll see in Black Gold, there are more shifters, more adventures, and morechaos for the guys to get into. GO WOLFIES!

And the Granite Lake books, since they are set around alocation and setting more than a situation, will also continue. The next bookin that series is WOLF LINE featuring Jared (met in WOLF GAMES) and hissweetie. The novella will be bringing some wolfie fun in June of 2012.

So what else shall I leave you with? How about making sureyou know that there are two short free reads you can enjoy that go after WOLFSIGNS and WOLF FLIGHT. The books can be found on my website under Books: Free.I hope to write a couple more little ones in the future, once I’m all caught upfrom my travels.

I also wanted to mention about music. Now, some authorswrite to music. I can’t do that or the lyrics end up in my stories. But thereare a couple of songs that do come to mind when I think about the wolfies andBlack Gold. This is song performed by Canadian kd lang titled Barefoot feels like a GraniteLake/Takhini wolves song.

And while I wrote Black Gold I did have some lines from thesong Black & Gold running throughmy head. There are a number of artists who have performed this song by SamSparro. I like Adele’s version the best.

I was hoping to have some posts pre-scheduled and all that jazz...
But it looks like that isn't going to happen.
This week is orientation at the college.
So that means that we are busy getting ready for the first day of classes on the 6th.
After that? Probably about 2 weeks before things settle down a bit....

Well, unfortunately not as much blog content as usual.
I'm hoping to still get some reviews down, but really, I need to just not worry about
the blog and concentrate on work.

The first thing I wrote on GoodReads was I don't know if I should give this a 1 or a 5! So I went with a 5!! This was an amazing read, full of propaganda. It's a scary thought on what society could turn into. This isn't really a review, I just wanted to make people aware of it, and that I definitely suggest picking it up!!

I always love Maya Banks,
and wanted to take a chance on her historicals!

My Rambles:
I'm going to start off with sharing two of my favourite quotes:

"You don't kiss the correct way," she blurted out.
......
"You must keep your mouth closed."
"I see."
She nodded to reinforce her statement. "Aye, these are no tongues involved in kissing. 'Tis undignified."
"Undignified?"
Again she nodded. This was going better than she imagined. He was taking her instructions quite well.

and...

As soon as his body touched hers, she stirred and snuggled into his arms like a warm kitten on a cold night. She uttered a deep sigh against his neck and proceeded to wrap her legs around his while throwing one arm over his body.
He smiled. She was a possessive thing in bed. She considered his body her territory and she had no compunction about laying claim whenever he got near. Not that he minded. In truth, there was something about having a warm, sweet lass wrapped around him that appealed to him more than he'd ever though possible.
....
Aye, the lass was getting under his skin. He'd been right about her from the moment he'd first laid eyes on her. She was definitely trouble.

There is just something about Ms. Banks' writing that makes me sit up and take notice. She just has such an elegant way of putting words to paper. I always sigh happily when I get to The End.
And this was no exception.
I really am not usually a big historical fan. I completely overdosed on them in highschool, and now I usually have to force myself to pick one up.
I think my addiction might be coming back because I can't wait for Seduction of a Highland Lass and Never Love a Highlander books 2 and 3 in the series!!
Also, I usually HATE when characters talk with a brogue or Scottish speech. But she made it work, and I actually enjoyed it.

Weigh In - #RBW - The Lag Report

I'm totally lagging.
I'm not gaining, but I just can't seem to commit to this weight loss.
I was hoping to be in more of a routine by now.
I wanted to have had some significant loss by now.
I just don't know if I am fully committed.
There has to be a change in my diet, and I am working on that.

Why did I read it?
Was sent to me. I decided to see what it was all about.

My Rambles:
Jill found herself immersed in an amazing adventure a la pirates of the Caribbean!
Female Captains!
Battles at sea!
Learning the importance of things - what truly matters in life!

My only complaint was the rapier she found. I wish we had learned more about it. I didn't fully conceptualize how the magical item came to be and what exactly it did. It was explained how it was made *shudder* but I just couldn't fully understand HOW and WHY it ended up being magical. I guess that is where fantasy comes into play!

AND the possibility of a sequel right???
